Both are Thatcham-approved and monitored 24/7 — but they’re built for different vehicles and different policies. Here’s how to choose with confidence.
Both the Meta Trak S5 and S7 are Thatcham-approved GPS/GSM tracking systems monitored around the clock. The practical difference comes down to driver recognition tags: the S5 includes them, the S7 does not. That single distinction drives which one your insurer asks for and which suits your vehicle’s value.
Rule of thumb: higher-value and high-theft-risk vehicles usually need the S5; the S7 is often sufficient for lower-value cars or as a secondary requirement. Always confirm against your specific policy — we do this for you during a free assessment.
The S7 is a Thatcham Category S7 tracker. It provides continuous GPS/GSM location tracking with 24/7 monitoring and a smartphone app, plus alerts for battery disconnection and movement. If your car is moved, you and the monitoring centre can see it.
What it doesn’t include is automatic driver recognition. The S7 can’t by itself tell the difference between you driving away and a thief driving away — it tracks location, but doesn’t flag unauthorised movement on its own.
The S5 is the higher Thatcham category. It does everything the S7 does and adds ADR (Automatic Driver Recognition) tags — small fobs each authorised driver carries. If the vehicle moves while no authorised tag is present, the system immediately flags it as a potential theft to the secure control room, which liaises with police for rapid recovery.
This is the whole decision in one paragraph. With the S5, unauthorised movement is detected automatically and in real time, which is exactly the scenario in a relay or transporter theft. With the S7, you rely on noticing the car is gone and reporting it. For a high-value car that an organised team could move within seconds, that automatic detection is why insurers ask for S5.
Start with your insurance schedule. If it specifies a Thatcham category, that decides it. If it doesn’t, the choice usually follows the car: a six-figure Range Rover, Bentley or Porsche should be on S5; a more modest vehicle may be well served by S7. When in doubt, fit up — the cost difference is small relative to the vehicle and the peace of mind.
