No vehicle in Britain has been targeted harder than the Range Rover. For several years the theft rate was severe enough that mainstream insurers withdrew cover for some models in London postcodes altogether, and specialist policies were written on the condition that an approved tracker and an immobiliser were both fitted. Land Rover has since moved to ultra-wideband keys on newer cars, but the L405 generation and the Sports and Velars alongside it remain the most stolen vehicles we are asked to protect.

Relay attack copies the signal from a key inside the house and repeats it at the car - it takes under a minute and needs nothing more than two people and a pair of handheld units. The second, CAN injection, bypasses the key entirely by reaching the vehicle network through an accessible harness and instructing the car to unlock and start. It was first documented publicly on a different marque, but the technique is generic to CAN-based vehicles and it is the reason a tracker alone is no longer a sufficient answer on a car of this kind.
On the L405 and L460 there is genuinely discreet routing available, and we use it - the unit does not go where a thief expects to find it, and we will not tell you on a public web page where that is. The vehicle's own systems stay untouched: we take a switched and a permanent feed from factory points, use the manufacturer's connector standards, and there is no cutting or splicing into the loom. Air suspension needs the car left in the right mode while we work, which is one reason we prefer a drive or a garage over a kerbside bay for these.
